Job Description

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

• Lead the investigation and resolution of product and design-related issues for New Engine Installation (NEI) programs and field applications, identifying root causes, recommending solutions, and documenting outcomes to drive continuous improvement.
• Support the execution of key engineering and product development processes, including Critical Design Decisions, Design Reviews, System Design and Validation Consideration Checklists, and other quality-focused methodologies that enable sound design decisions.
• Utilize engineering tools and methods such as iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, and ANSYS Workbench to evaluate, refine, and validate component and subsystem designs.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams, technical experts, and senior designers to develop comprehensive Design Review packages that clearly communicate design intent and support informed decision-making.
• Contribute to Customer Engineering Approval Form (CEAF), New Engine Installation (NEI), and Engineering Change Request (ECR) initiatives by assessing design concepts and supporting concept selection, optimization, and specification development.
• Own the resolution of moderately complex technical challenges involving components, subsystems, products, and services, balancing performance, quality, reliability, and customer requirements.
• Independently execute established engineering processes and systems while identifying opportunities to improve workflows, strengthen design practices, and enhance product development effectiveness.
• Coordinate with technicians and temporary team members as needed, while contributing to team objectives and helping drive successful project outcomes through collaboration and technical expertise.

External Qualifications and Competencies

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

• Demonstrate strong expertise in cross-functional design integration, translating stakeholder requirements into effective design solutions and clearly communicating design intent through comprehensive design reviews.
• Apply advanced mechanical design principles to develop innovative, reliable, and manufacturable systems that meet customer needs throughout all stages of the product lifecycle.
• Leverage mechanical design modeling and analysis tools, including CAD, dimensional variation analysis, and finite element analysis, to evaluate design performance and support engineering decisions.
• Develop detailed mechanical design specifications, including engineering drawings, solid models, and bills of materials, ensuring compliance with industry, customer, and organizational standards.
• Utilize product function modeling, simulation, and analysis techniques to assess product capability, validate design concepts, and influence critical design decisions.
• Drive effective product problem solving by identifying root causes, implementing data-driven corrective actions, and preventing recurring issues while maintaining a strong customer focus.
• Apply systems thinking and requirements engineering principles to translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements, evaluate impacts of change, and ensure alignment across the product development lifecycle.
• Excel in collaboration, communication, decision-making, and results delivery, building strong partnerships across functions, communicating effectively with diverse stakeholders, and continuously pursuing professional growth while contributing to successful product development outcomes.

Education, Licenses, Certifications: Bachelor's degree in an appropriate STEM field, or equivalent experience, is required. This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations. Experience: Entry level/Early career professional. Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in either a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline area. Knowledge of MS Office and CREO tools is also preferred.

Additional Responsibilities Unique to this Position

This role will be part of DBU's CSSNA Industrial HMLD Design Engineering team, focusing primarily on off-highway industrial Power Unit and OEM custom design engineering. The mechanical Design Engineer will support the installation and integration of Cummins engines and related systems into customer equipment by developing and maintaining CAD models, drawings, and bills of material; collaborating closely with Application Engineering to understand customer requirements and advisor recommendations; ensuring engine installation requirements, packaging constraints, cooling, serviceability, and product safety considerations are met; participating in design reviews and engineering change activities; supporting prototype builds and validation efforts; and working with manufacturing, quality, sourcing, and cross-functional teams to deliver robust, customer-focused solutions while gaining experience in product development, engineering standards, and mechanical system integration.
